     William B. Stetson, MD

  • Dr. Stetson specializes in sports medicine with an expertise in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle.

Dr. Stetson attended the University of Southern California on an athletic scholarship where he was a two-time NCAA All-American in volleyball, a member of the NCAA National Championship Volleyball Team in 1980, captain of the 1982 team, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He was a five-time Gold Medalist with the US Open National Volleyball Championship Team Nike and played professionally in the United States and Germany. He attended the USC Keck School of Medicine and completed his Residency at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. He completed his Fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute, is Board Certified and has been in private practice since 1995. He recently joined Scott Powell to form Stetson Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Both Dr. Stetson and Dr. Powell are fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy and have over 20 years of surgical experience between the two of them.

Dr. Stetson specializes in sports medicine with an expertise in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle. He has first hand knowledge of athletic injuries and the desire that all of us have to “get back in the game”.

Dr. Stetson is recognized throughout the country for his numerous contributions to both the local and the medical community. Heavily involved in clinical research and academic development, Dr. Stetson has presented his research papers at orthopaedic conferences held domestically and internationally. He has appeared on television and radio talk shows and regularly writes sports related articles for publications throughout the country. He is equally well known in Southern California for volunteering his time as a team physician for high school, junior college and university athletic teams. Dr. Stetson is currently one of the team physicians for the United States Men’s Volleyball Team and the United States Olympic Committee.

Dr. Stetson is passionate about education and sharing his knowledge of orthopaedic medicine. By offering a Sports Medicine Fellowship Program in his office, he instructs young orthopedic surgeons on the latest techniques of arthroscopic surgery. In addition to the fellowship program he is an instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) where he teaches surgeons from around the world the newest techniques of arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery. Finally, Dr. Stetson is also an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California Department of Orthopaedic Surgery where he instructs orthopaedic residents and medical students.

Dr. Stetson has a desire to share his passion for arthoscopic surgery with doctors from around the world. In addition to his local endeavors to educate young doctors, Dr. Stetson has visited Cuba on multiple occasions to teach the orthopaedic doctors how to perform arthroscopic surgery, has visited Haiti on a medicinal missionary trip and has donated arthroscopy equipment to Dr. Anh Nguyen, who was then able to perform the first shoulder arthroscopy in Vietnam. Dr. Stetson has also traveled extensively throughout the world teaching and lecturing.

Dr. Stetson has a passion for sports, the desire to heal, and a first-hand understanding of the medical needs of an athlete in training and the weekend warrior.
